About the record race
To put an end to rumors of unlikely climbs under ten minutes, we decided to officially find the fastest. We first organized “Rekord” in 1991 as a spring variant of the classic “Šmarna gora race”. The traditional Run was to be prepared in the autumn of the same year, but the events that took place that June and brought Slovenia to independence prevented the organizer’s plans.
In memory to Tom
In the winter of 1996, we revived the idea of organizing the Record, but the initiative came entirely from elsewhere. On February 1, 1995, Tom, one of us, members of the Šmarnogorska naveza, died in an accident in the Slovenian mountains. Thus, every first Saturday in February for 15 years in a row, the cream of Slovenian mountain running gathered at the foot of Šmarna gora.
At the highest level of its time
During this period, the “Record of Šmarna gora” was a competitive and organizational event at the highest level in Slovenia. From this period we record the fastest ascent of the representative of the fairer sex – the women’s absolute record of Mateja Kosovelj is 13min 18s. Among men, the record was owned by Zarnik Sebastjan – 11min 25s.
Despite the cold, wind and snow
After a decade and a half, in the winter of 2011, the organizers carried out the Record without the usual pomp – as a competition with individual starts. From then until the 20th performance in February 2015, Rekord in a “modified” image hosted a quality and numerous participation of competitors who came to our race despite the cold, wind and snow.
